Feeding Cleveland: Creating a Sustainable Local Food System

C. Clare Hinrichs, the noted expert on food systems, will tour Cleveland Wednesday. She will then speak
to a Cleveland State University forum at the Levin College of Urban Affairs at four o'clock this afternoon.
Hinrichs is Associate Professor of Rural Sociology at Penn State University and Co- Editor of the book “Remaking the North American Food System: Strategies for Sustainability." Reviewer Mark Lapping says the series of essays are a good place to start in the study of the country's food system.
"In essence, these approaches hold the potential to genuinely revolutionize one of the most basic things we do on a daily basis." He writes.
Organizers hope she will discuss not only about what is good about the food system in Northeast Ohio but also suggest solutions for any weak points that she may notice.
Molly Schnoke, is project coordinator for the Center for Civic Education who helped organize the project for the Levin College Forum.
She hopes, “ Clare Hinrichs will figure out the gaps in the Northeast Ohio food system and tell conferees how they can fill those gaps.”
A panel of local experts will also give their views of the food system in Northeast Ohio.
They include Megan Chaney, Planner, Cuyahoga County Planning Commission.

Brad Masi, Founder, New Agrarian Center,
Sharon Glaspie, Director, Garden Boyz,
The panel will be moderated by Barbara Strauss, Assistant Director for Technical Services, Cleveland State University Library.
The event kicks off at 4 p.m. Wednesday and runs until 6 p.m. at the Levin College of Urban Affairs at 1717 Euclid Avenue
Schnoke adds that the challenge for event planners was to sort through a lot of sustainability issues to find one to focus on.
